Ignacio&nbsp;&nbsp;for the first of three Jesuit \u2018missions\u2019 in the area \u2013 there were many more, but these three were handy: San Ignacio, Loreto and Santa Ana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>San Ignacio is the best preserved\/reconstructed, with much \u2018replacement\u2019 stonework robbed out of the other two sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" \u2018temple\u2019 is perhaps the most known Mission archaeology in Argentina, being reproduced frequently, but the whole site is rather splendid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Signacio-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Signacio-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Signacio-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Signacio-1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There were dozens of grey-breasted martins nesting in and flying around the inner walls of the temple, making the species an ideal choice for bird of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/221004-grey-breasted-martin-Puerto-Iguazu-Posadas-copy-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4036\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/221004-grey-breasted-martin-Puerto-Iguazu-Posadas-copy-1.jpg 1000w, \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I only visited these three missions, but there are\/were many more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" me, as I had visited Loreto in Corrientes, whence the population of the Loreto in Misiones had fled to get away from slave-traders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/loreto-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/loreto-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/loreto-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/loreto-1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The ruins here were only partly uncovered, making the overgrown site a more natural place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sra-Ana-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4041\" there was a little more original stonework there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sra-Ana-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4042\" layout. All the missions (also known as \u2018reductions\u2019) had the same features \u2013 main temple, chapel, workers\u2019 quarters, Jesuit quarters, orchard and vegetable garden, cemetery, etc. \u2013 but the layouts varied considerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I then spent a couple of hours chasing an endemic bird (yellow-headed blackbird) but he wasn\u2019t where he was supposed to be, so I dipped again. You can\u2019t win them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spent the night in a quite cabin just outside Posadas. It was a long way from anywhere,&nbsp;&nbsp;so I cooked myself some onion soup for supper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/home-tonight.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/home-tonight.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/home-tonight-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/home-tonight-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomorrow the journey south continues, with intentions to spend the night somewhere near Bonpland, Corriente.
