Left Tantanacuy for an \u2018ethno-cultural\u2019 day, visiting local people and learning about their lives. First stop a bilingual school, Spanish\/Wichi. Interestingly, some English had crept in, courtesy of the director who is very eco-aware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picked up something new for my bathroom door collection too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The school was at the heart of the Wichi community, and I was accompanied by two \u2018guides\u2019 who were happy to show me around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Their very limited Spanish and my non-existent Wichi made for an interesting tour, which seemed to centre on trees as much as people. Here\u2019s one example \u2013 sorry, don\u2019t know what kind of tree this is.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I particularly liked their meeting area \u2013 where plans and dreams can be discussed under the shade of a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A little bit of shopping followed \u2013 I turned down the offer of a cow\u2019s head but bought some sunscreen for a future boat trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Then to a leatherworker\u2019s home where I bought a rawhide lasso …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

…and had a tasty lunch of pulled goat cooked in maize flour \u2013 much tastier than it sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

They make all kinds of leather wear including full body protection against thorns for people and horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And I went on a river trip in a kayak …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

… and visited a weaver, currently working on a giant anteater …. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

… and a worker with Palo Santo wood, from whom I bought a mortero<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

All in all a fascinating day. Everyone I meet is very proud of their Chaco, and I am learning a lot about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not much birding these days, but not a problem. I did get my bird of the day on my walk around the Wichi school \u2013 a whistling heron (replacement photo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supper was a strange invention \u2013 very tasty, but hard to describe: a triple sandwich cooked in cheese with meat and salad filling. Washed down with Brahma beer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was amused by the name of the restaurant, Clemente, a reminder of a World Cup way back when<\/p>\n\n\n\n
