Arrived in Posadas about 08.00 am to a crisp, sunny morning and took a taxi to the airport, some fifteen minutes from the bus terminal, where I picked up my rental car \u2013 the lowest of the Chevy range but good enough for my purposes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2742\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2742\" class=\"wp-image-2742 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Chevrolet_Corsa_Evolution_1.8_GLS_Sedan_2005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Chevrolet_Corsa_Evolution_1.8_GLS_Sedan_2005.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Chevrolet_Corsa_Evolution_1.8_GLS_Sedan_2005-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Chevrolet_Corsa_Evolution_1.8_GLS_Sedan_2005-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chevrolet Corsa, my wheels for the next ten days<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The distance to Mercedes, in the Province of Corrientes, at least the way I drove it, was about 500 kms so I made a promise to myself not to stop and take photos along the way. And that was really hard, with so much wetland, so much avian activity. But it was the only day of my trip with heavy mileage (kilometrage?) and inevitably something of a grin and bear it journey. Trees more or less disappeared along the highway, making the ones that were there stand out like planted specimens on a country estate.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2738\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2738\" class=\"wp-image-2738 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Santo-Tome-acceso.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Santo-Tome-acceso.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Santo-Tome-acceso-447x300.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Santo Tom\u00e9 was founded in 1632 by the Jesuit missionaries Luis Ernot and Manuel Bertot, with help from two native Guaran\u00ed chiefs that converted to Christianity. Its name is variedly found as Santo Tom\u00e1s, Santo Tom\u00e1s Ap\u00f3stol, Santo Thom\u00e9 and Santo Tom\u00e9&#8221; .. hoc dixit wikipedia..<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A spot of lunch in Santo Tom\u00e9 (a very filling milanesa sandwich), and back in the saddle. Missing Silver the Jeep, but the hire car was fine and I got to Mercedes at about 16.30. Quite a classy hotel for what I paid, and doubles as the local casino so pretty busy as the evening wore on. I managed to repack my luggage rather more intelligently on arrival, so I don\u2019t have to get everything out when I come to an evening stop &#8211; &nbsp;but obviously nothing is ever in the right place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2743\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2743\" class=\"wp-image-2743 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mapa-ibera.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"220\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tomorrow&#8217;s much shorter journey to C. Pelligrini<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tomorrow an early start for the 130 kilometres to Colonia Carlos Pelligrini, where I shall stay three days. Mercedes is known as the gateway to Iber\u00e1, so many birders will have been this way before. I have been told by several people that the last 40 kms of the Approach road to C. Pelligrini are good for birding so shall have a leisurely drive, stopping often.
