Surprisingly, our eventual itinerary bears a surprising similarity to our original plan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/final-route.jpg\" alt=\"final-route\" width=\"1150\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/final-route.jpg 1150w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/final-route-768x359.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/final-route-500x233.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1150px) 100vw, 1150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spent <strong>12<\/strong>\u00a0days on the road and travelled a total distance of <strong>4,517<\/strong>\u00a0kilometres (2806.73 miles.\u00a0Our\u00a0average km per litre was <strong>7.46<\/strong> (21.07\u00a0mpg) \u2013 but this varied enormously day on day according to road surface (Silver has a six cylinder 4.1 litre appetite) which was miraculously exactly the same on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/archives\/1076\">Ruta 40 (South) trip<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>We kept mostly to tarmac, with about 20% of gravel roads, and engaged 4WD twice only; once on an iffy, gravelly mountain road and once when Martin reversed into a ditch.<\/p>\n<p>We slept\u00a0<strong>4<\/strong>\u00a0nights in <strong>hotels<\/strong>, <strong>4<\/strong>\u00a0in <strong>self-catering apartments<\/strong>, <strong>1<\/strong>\u00a0in a <strong>motel<\/strong>, <strong>1<\/strong> in a <strong>bungalow<\/strong> and <strong>1<\/strong> in a <strong>purple cabin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We concluded that <strong>WiFi<\/strong> in Patagonia is mostly crap and that finding a <strong>cash dispenser<\/strong> that works is like looking for gold.<\/p>\n<p>We bought <strong>books<\/strong> on Butch Cassidy and Birds in Chile, a <strong>Welsh teapot<\/strong> with hand-knitted <strong>tea cosy <\/strong>and a<strong> &#8216;torta negra galesa&#8217; <\/strong>(the Patagonian version of a Welsh fruit cake) \u00a0in Trelew and Gaiman, <strong>straw birds<\/strong> from Chiloe, a <strong>teeshirt<\/strong> from the paleontological museum in Trelew and a bunch of other stuff<\/p>\n<p>We saw <strong>penguins<\/strong>, <strong>sea lions<\/strong>, <strong>seals<\/strong>, <strong>dolphins<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>elephant seals<\/strong>, <strong>rheas<\/strong>, <strong>armadillos<\/strong>, <strong>guanacos<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>red foxes, grey foxes,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>hares<\/strong>, <strong>rabbits<\/strong>, a <strong>mink<\/strong>, a number of <strong>lizards<\/strong> and maybe a <strong>pudu<\/strong>.. Lots of birds too (Caroline spotted an <strong>owl<\/strong> and took her first bird photo) but this was not a birding trip. Sadly we missed the <strong>whales<\/strong> and <strong>orcas<\/strong> (and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_viscacha\"><strong>killer bunnies<\/strong><\/a>), but it&#8217;s good to have a reason to go back (as if we needed one).<\/p>\n<p>We have travelled through snowcapped mountains, forests, lush green pastures and deserts, and have seen the rising and setting sun on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts<\/p>\n<p>Miraculously, we\u00a0seem to have kept our\u00a0total costs within budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>22 November, 2016 : San Mart\u00edn de los Andes Finally home.
