We left our super hotel in Esquel and set off for a long journey half-way across the continent, aiming for Los Altares. It was\u00a0still raining as we left, but we did get some better weather as we drove westwards towards the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2310\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2310\" class=\"wp-image-2310 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-4.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-4-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our hotel in Esquel &#8211; very comfortable!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we drove west, we saw kaleidoscopic\u00a0changes in the landscape around us, ranging from lush meadowland to arid desert, and from flat plateau to rocky outcrop, with some spectacular mountain formations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2311\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2311\" class=\"wp-image-2311 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-4.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-4-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another change in landscape<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We spent long stretches with no sight of man or vehicle; traffic is sparse in this part of Patagonia. We passed at least two petrol stations that had been abandoned &#8211; perhaps modern cars have larger tanks (or better consumption)?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2312\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2312\" class=\"wp-image-2312 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/3-4.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/3-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/3-4-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abandoned service station on route<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first town on our route was Tecka, where we stoped for a second breakfast. The sign at the entrance to the town allowed for little chance of confusion as to where we were.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2313\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2313\" class=\"wp-image-2313 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/4-4.jpg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/4-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/4-4-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Approaching the small town of Tecka<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Driving on, we reached Paso de Indios. The road here came closer to the Chubut river, Camwy to the Welsh who \u2013on information provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.ar\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=tehuelche&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;gfe_rd=cr&amp;ei=H4UtWK-oO6XX8ge29IbgCg#\">Tehuelche<\/a>\u00a0people\u2013 made their way from the Atlantic coast to Trevelin in search of wetter and more fertile lands.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2314\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2314\" class=\"wp-image-2314 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-4.jpg\" alt=\"5\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-4-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paso de Indios<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Paso de Indios was a small but well laid out community, and a suitable place for a cheap and filling lunch at the <em>Comedor Ruta 40<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2315\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2315\" class=\"wp-image-2315 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6-4.jpg\" alt=\"6\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6-4-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lunch stop at Comedor Ruta 40, Paso de Indios<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Driving on we passed a friendly gaucho herding his sheep &#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2316\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2316\" class=\"wp-image-2316 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/7-4.jpg\" alt=\"7\" width=\"700\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/7-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/7-4-401x300.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Farmer riding with his sheep<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;. and shrines, some to friends and family and others of\u00a0the Gauchito Gil and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Difunta_Correa\">Difunta Correa<\/a> cults. We were the only people staying there, but there was an emergency contact at the nearby Petrol Station should we run into difficulty.
