Our aims were vague but we hoped to see some of the UNESCO world heritage churches (see <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Churches_of_Chilo\u00e9\">here<\/a>) and perhaps if we were lucky a Pelican or two. Humble ambitions, but as it happened both adequately fulfilled.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2245\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2245\" class=\"wp-image-2245 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-1.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1-1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We took the ferry from mainland Chile to the island of Chiloe<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ferry was drive on-drive off, and one of the five in service\u00a0took us immediately across to Chiloe island. The currents were strong and the boat took an elliptical route to combat them but it was a smooth ride. We saw several dolphins sporting in the water, but they disappeared as soon as Martin went to get his camera.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2246\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2246\" class=\"wp-image-2246 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1a.jpg\" alt=\"1a\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1a.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1a-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We saw houses on stilts as we approached the town of Castro<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Leaving the ferry we hit the Route 5 once again and drove down to the central town of Castro. This has been victim to earthquakes and tsunamis in the past, and the houses are mostly one story buildings, some near the water built on stilts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2247\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2247\" class=\"wp-image-2247 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-1.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2-1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cathedral in Castro&#8217;s main Plaza<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We parked up in the main plaza for lunch, and wandered around the town a little, enjoying the cathedral (tiled externally with yellow painted pieces of corrugated iron) and the countless delightful wooden buildings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2248\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2248\" class=\"wp-image-2248 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/3-1.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/3-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/3-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wooden houses were to be seen everywhere<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most of the houses we saw were made of wood, an easily available local resource, and decorated with shingles\u00a0cut into a variety of shapes. Here we saw gulls of several species, pelicans and seals. We had lunch to the accompaniment of Eric Clapton, and saw evidence of modern fashion aongside the older island traditional feel. We didn&#8217;t meet any of the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/into-the-cave-of-chiles-witches-20138093\/?no-ist\">witches<\/a>, but everyone was very warm\u00a0and friendly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2254\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2254\" class=\"wp-image-2254 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/9.jpg\" alt=\"9\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/9.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/9-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hippies sharing a drink at the back of the market in Castro<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From Castro we drove back to the ferry by way of Dalcahue. Translating from Huillche, the name \u00a0means place (<em>hue<\/em>) of\u00a0boats (<em>dalcas<\/em>).
