Our plan was to follow the itinerary we had worked on (above). It will be interesting to see how well we stick to it. Silver the Jeep was cleaner than he has been for a long time, recently serviced and champing at the bit to be on the road again. We were off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2202\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2202\" class=\"wp-image-2202 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-1.jpg\" alt=\"start-1\" width=\"700\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-1-464x300.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leaving San Mart\u00edn at 07.50<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our first stop was Jun\u00edn de los Andes, where we filled the tank and set off on the road to Lake\u00a0Tromen and the Mamuil Malal mountain pass. Jun\u00edn calls itself the trout fishing capital of the world, and certainly fly fisherman from all parts of the world do come here to fish on the legendary Chimehuin river. (Martin actually prefers the nearby Malleo, but that&#8217;s another story).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2203\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2203\" class=\"wp-image-2203 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-2.jpg\" alt=\"start-2\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-2-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Junin de los Andes &#8211; self-styled trout fishing capital of the world<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We passed several roadside shrines while still in Argentina &#8211; the one in the picture below is one of many dedicated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gauchito_Gil\">Gaucho Gil<\/a> who, together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Difunta_Correa\">Difunta Correa<\/a>,\u00a0are two semilegendary figures in Argentine folklore (see links for more info) with countless shrines dotted around the country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2204\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2204\" class=\"wp-image-2204 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-3.jpg\" alt=\"start-3\" width=\"700\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-3.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-3-384x300.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shrine to the Gauchito Gil, a legendary character in Argentine popular culture<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we neared the Chilean border the massive\u00a0Lan\u00edn Volcano was ever present to our south, surrounded only by occasional wisps of cloud. We were lucky to get such a clear view as the peak is often obscured by clouds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2201\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2201\" class=\"wp-image-2201 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-4.jpg\" alt=\"start-4\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-4.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-4-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Lan\u00edn Volcano kept us company all the way to the Chilean border<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we entered the Lan\u00edn National Park we saw hundreds of Auracaria trees, some mere saplings and some very old indeed. The road surface was rougher here, and although mettled was a bit bouncy. Everything was suddenly much greener; it rains much more on this side of the Andes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2199\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2199\" class=\"wp-image-2199 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-6.jpg\" alt=\"start-6\" width=\"700\" height=\"589\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-6.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-6-357x300.jpg 357w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crossing into Chilean territory<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The officers at the Chilean customs post were working to rule and kept us waiting for about an hour and a half but we were soon through (the actual process was quick and very efficient on both sides).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2198\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2198\" class=\"wp-image-2198 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-7.jpg\" alt=\"start-7\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-7.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-7-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Queue at the Chilean border<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although technically a &#8216;low pass&#8217;, we found that we still had a long and twisting descent as we entered Chile, but the roads were in excellent condition. As in\u00a0many mountain passes between Argentina and Chile some Araucaria trees had been left in the middle of the roads when they were\u00a0constructed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2197\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2197\" class=\"wp-image-2197 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-8.jpg\" alt=\"start-8\" width=\"700\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-8.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-8-271x300.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Through the Chilean border<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Araucaria_araucana\">Araucaria<\/a>\u00a0tree is a local species known as\u00a0<em>Pehu\u00e9n<\/em>\u00a0by people in the region and internationally in English as the Monkey Puzzle Tree or Chilean Pine. Throughout our journey in both Argentina and Chile the sides of the road and the hillsides were also covered with gorgeous yellow\u00a0broom bushes (<em>Genisteae<\/em>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2196\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2196\" class=\"wp-image-2196 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-8a.jpg\" alt=\"start-8a\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-8a.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-8a-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The yellow broom filled the landscape throughout the day<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Before too long we found ourselves in the touristy town of Puc\u00f3n, where we found a money exchange house and a welcome cup of coffee before continuing on through the town of Villarrica (a large lake and another huge volcano) to hit Route 5, the wonderful spinal motorway that is the Chilean contribution to the\u00a0Pan-American Highway. Note the red petrol can on the roof of Silver the Jeep slap bang in the middle of the picture.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2195\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2195\" class=\"wp-image-2195 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-9.jpg\" alt=\"start-9\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-9.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.eayrs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/start-9-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quiet street in Puc\u00f3n, where we stopped for morning coffee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After about an hour on Route 5 we branched west to Valdivia, and after another fifty miles or so found our Apart-Hotel. Cunningly concealed, and with an initially baffling set of keys, the &#8216;hotel&#8217; was very spacious, with cooking facilities that we completely ignored as we went round the corner to stuff our faces at a glorious fixed price buffet, with free wine and coffee. We got back to the hotel at about 10.00 pm, tired but happy, and early to bed to prepare for day 2.
